Ride Your Bike in Beautiful New York

By Patrica Williams

The expression I love New York is popular for good reason. Most people who think of New York think of the city of New York and forget about the state. There is so much more to see that if you're one of those who only think of the city, you are in for a treat. Biking is one of the best ways to truly appreciate the jewels of this great state.

The Auburn Fleming trail near Auburn, New York is a mere three miles of old railroad bed. Since it is mostly flat it is the perfect bike trail for the novice biker or those just looking for a leisurely ride. The trail is made up of crushed gravel and dirt and is used by other pedestrians and riders. So, always be on the lookout for others. You'll be thankful for the slow pace though, because there is lots of beautiful scenery packed into this short little ride.

In Speculator, New York there is another spot that is perfect for beginners. Mason Lake has a logging road that is a gravel path about 6 miles long. It is well maintained though not well traveled. Truly an ideal spot to bring the kids, Mason Lake deserves a spot on this list.

If you are looking for a trail with a bit more to offer go to Weedsport, NY. The Erie Canal/Cayuga Country Trail System stretches from Buffalo to Albany. What is especially nice about this trail is the ability to form your own path. The 15 miles of track has many entry ways, which make it easy to customize. There is no shortage of scenery, so be sure to bring your camera.

The Ninham Mountain trail is a 15-miles loop near Carmel, New York. There is something here for everyone, but since there are no maps of the area, it might be best to ride with someone who knows the trail. You absolutely must climb the old Ninham Mountain fire tower for incredible views of Catskills!

If you enjoy the well paved paths often provided by popular ski resorts, you will love the Dryer Road bike trails of Victor. There are so many options with these paths that you will not get bored. They often add new bike paths throughout the season, so this is a favorite among regulars. There is plenty to practice on with s-turns, descents and great cut backs.

Montauk derives its name from the Algonquin Indians who inhabited the area. It is the eastern most point of New York and is home to many Hollywood celebrities. It is a hot spot for vacationers and tourists because of its laid back beach community feel. For you experienced bikers, check out the Hither Woods Trails. There are approximately 40 miles of trails as well as sprawling parks that you are sure to see some wildlife and incredible scenery. The paths are quite narrow and there are great drop offs and cliffs, so you must use caution when riding these paths.

New York is a great state filled with diversity both in culture and landscape. Though this list only mentions a few biking paths, the state is filled with hidden hot spots just waiting to be discovered. Many are worth a repeat visit and I'm sure you'll find something that is worth your ride.
